The 59 deaths in Las Vegas in early October was terrible. We pray for the victims and their families, friends, neighbors and businesses.

We must also pray for the families and friends of the 91 Americans who die each day from opioid overdose.

Michigan opioid OD deaths jumped 54% between 2015 and 2016. A total of 1,365 died from opioid overdoses in 2016, compared to 884 in 2015 and 426 in 2012. That doesn’t include include heroin deaths, which actually went down from 391 in 2015 to 324 in 2016.There were 222 heroin deaths in 2012.

Including heroin, opioids accounted for 72 percent of all Michigan’s drug overdose deaths in 2016.

While the U.S. has about 5 percent of the world’s population, it consumes about 80 percent of the global supply of prescription opioids.
